The regular “heat only” boiler is made up of a boiler, a water storage tank for cold water and a hot water storing cylinder. This allows the system to provide both hot water for washing as well as a source for heating.
This is especially useful for a larger household with more bathrooms or additional en-suite rooms. It means that people can enjoy a hot shower without worrying that the water flow could be affected if someone wants to put the washing machine on downstairs. It is also effective in areas with low water pressure.
The disadvantage is that this type of boiler is not always compatible with newer forms of heating systems and at times you may find yourself waiting for water to heat up. Given the fact you need both a cylinder and a storage tank there is also a space issue, so this is something that needs to be considered during the installation process.
A system boiler is similar to the regular version albeit the separate hot water tank isn’t vented and is considered an upgrade on the heat only option. The process is still largely the same, providing heat on demand as people want to use it. Another advantage is that because it uses internal pump and expansion vessels it doesn’t need a cold water tank.
Essentially this means less storage issues than a regular boiler while still providing more heat than a smaller combi unit. However unlike the regular boiler they tend to fare better in local areas with high water pressure. It is also important that there is space available for the unit’s hot water storage cylinder.
